Appropriate Storage Methods

Watches are very delicate devices.
They can be affected by even mild external shocks, so care in their storage is necessary.

Storage Methods

1. Clean the watch before storing.

Storing the watch when it has dirt or moisture on it may cause malfunctions including rusting or a deterioration in its performance.

2. Store in an appropriate location.

In order to keep the watch in good condition, it is recommended that you store it at room temperature (between 5°C and 35°C) in a well-ventilated location.

Examples of Inappropriate Storage Locations

Near magnetic products In direct sunlight
Near magnetic products In direct sunlight
The effect of magnetism may cause hands to stop, or to gain or lose time. Direct sunlight may cause fading on the dial, or discoloration/deterioration of the leather band.
In high temperature or humidity, or with extreme temperature changes Where the watch may fall
In high temperature or humidity, or with extreme temperature changes Where the watch may fall
Heat and humidity can cause deterioration within the watch, causing the hands to stop, or to gain or lose time. Accidental dropping may cause damage to, or malfunction in the watch.
Near desiccants Near medicines or chemicals

Lubricating oil within the watch may dry out, causing a malfunction. Chemical reactions with highly volatile substances such as alcohol may cause discoloration of the watch.

3. Check the watch periodically.

Instead of leaving it in storage, periodically check the condition of the watch in order to ensure its prolonged use. How to check the watch will depend on its type (drive system).

  • Mechanical watches
Turn the hands once every three months in order to prevent the lubricating oil in the movement from hardening.
  • Quartz watches (battery-operated)
If the watch is left with a flat battery, the battery may leak.
If the watch stops, promptly replace the battery.
  • Quartz watches (solar charging)
If the battery is left for a long period of time with no remaining charge, recharging of the battery may no longer be possible. Periodically check the remaining charge of the battery, and charge as necessary.

Storage Locations for Quartz Watches (Solar Charging)

Solar-charged quartz watches operate by converting light such as sunlight absorbed by the solar cell on the dial into electrical energy (charging) to power the watch. Charging requires light of a sufficient intensity and duration.

It is recommended to store the watch in a well-lit location.

Storing the watch for a long period of time out of the light, such as in a drawer, may result in the following.

  • The stored energy may reach zero, and the watch may require charging for two to three days before it starts to work again.
  • Resetting of the time, calendar, and time zone will be required.
  • Not recharging the watch for a long period of time will render the battery fully discharged, resulting in it being unable to recharge and causing a malfunction.
